Saskatchewan has been known to have a very harsh winter, and that not only makes life colder for us humans but also for our furry friends.

While some dog breeds have an easier time in the cold like Huskies and St. Bernards, other breeds like the Pomeranian or the Shih Tzu have a harder time.

Vet Technician at the Bellamy Harrison Animal Hospital Raylene McDonald gave some tips on how to take care of your dog in winter.

"If your pets are normally indoors and you're going outside for a walk just be aware that they aren't used to the cold so if you want to put a jacket on them or boots that's a great idea. Make sure you consider the wind chill as well."

McDonald added that it's important to make sure your dogs have a place to get out of the wind if they will be spending time outside.

McDonald added more tips.

"Make sure that they eat more calories in the wintertime just because their body will be burning more calories trying to keep them warm. Also, make sure that you use plastic bowls rather than metal bowls.
