On Tuesday a team of walkers passed by the Friendly City on the highway.

Local authorities gave the group 'Hope in the Darkness' some support, as they have two teams walking across the country and meeting in Winnipeg to raise awareness about mental health in youth.

The walk for one group began in St John's on April 1st of this year, and the other in Haida Gwaii on May 15th, with both groups walking 40 kilometers a day since.

Mitchell Boulette, a police officer from Ontario who is also leading the walk, explained why they're making the trek across Canada.

"There's that stigma that officers don't care, so we're showing people that we care by walking 40 kilometers a day all across Canada, and we encourage youth to come and speak to us as we're walking to share their mental health crisis or any type of dealings they've had with police."

Boulette went on to add that family members of his have taken their lives and says that he wants to change the way we speak about mental health.

"When anybody mentions suicide or anything like that it's kind of shunned upon. The message that we want to get across is suicide isn't something that should be shunned. It's something that should be talked about."

Both groups will join together and meet in Winnipeg for a final ceremony on August 3rd.
