City Council heard on Wednesday night that, despite the need for some repairs, the Hillcrest Sports Centre is in “solid” and can continue to be used as rental space for recreational activities.

A baseline property condition assessment and indoor air quality assessment were done on the building after city council learned in late November that Gymtastiks would be terminating their lease effective Jan. 1, 2021.

Gymtastiks took over the lease in 2011 and, at the time, director of parks and recreation Derek Blais said city council “perceived” that the building was not in good condition.

The property condition assessment showed that the finishes for the building has exceeded its life expectancy, but the structure was still in really good shape.

The air quality assessment said there were some water leaks the needed repair to ensure the health and safety of the building’s occupants.

Coun. Heather Eby said she took a tour of the building recently with members of the Moose Jaw Tennis Club and couldn’t understand how city council came to the conclusion that the building was falling apart.

“In 2011, when we decided not to carry insurance on it, I liked the word that Mr. Blais used the perceived condition of the building,” she said.

“We were sold on the fact that that building was falling into itself and was a disaster and shame on me for not going and having a look.”

City council passed a motion to spend $50,000 for repairs to the building from the facilities building reserve to complete the repairs before April 30, 2021.
