A local performing arts group is having its first performance almost a year after its startup.

The Harmony Arts Program aims to foster and create interest in performing arts in local children.

The musical is Aladdin Jr. and the production is being held at the Crescent Park Amphitheatre. There will be two performances to ensure social distancing, one at 10:30 and one at 4:30. Donations will be accepted as admission.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been especially difficult for the performing arts sector as traditional performances did not coincide with restrictions.

.Artistic Director, Jan Nelson, says it has been difficult with kids having to self-isolate after being close contacts at school throughout the year.

"The kids have perseverance, it's been a good outlet for them, a good sense of purpose, and having something to work towards," says Nelson.

Nelson says the group has had to shift things and get creative to ensure a safe performance.

"We have just divided up the stage into a graph, that the kids work on so they maintain physical distance during the show," she says.

Nelson says although it was hard to put the performance together, the entire experience was rewarding.

"We've seen tremendous growth in the kids. Lots of confidence and lots of skills," says Nelson.
