Deer mice can carry the virus

Farmers, ranchers and cottage owners are being reminder to take precautions when working on buildings that don't get used that often.

One person is dead after contracting Hantavirus, the first fatal case of 2014. No details have been released but the person is said to be from southern Saskatchewan. Nine people have died since 1994 as a result of the virus with just shy of 30 reported cases.

Hantavirus is transmitted by breathing in contaminated airborne particles from the droppings, urine and saliva of infected deer mice.
