Hand, foot, and mouth disease is, unfortunately, making the rounds once again in Saskatchewan.

Children are most at risk of getting the disease, and with school being back in session there are more challenges for avoiding it.

Dr. David Torr, a consulting medical health officer for the Saskatchewan Health Authority, said adults are more protected from the disease.

"Very rarely will you see it affecting adults. Many adults will have already been exposed to these viruses during childhood, which is why we usually see it in children under the age of 10."

Preventative measures include washing hands, staying hydrated, and wearing indoor shoes while at school.

Babies and infants are also at risk for this disease. Changing diapers frequently, as well as washing hands and wiping down surfaces are good measures to take.

Torr added that it is best to prevent the disease because once you begin to have symptoms it is possible that you were exposed to it three to five days prior.

There is no treatment, but hand, foot, and mouth will typically subside on its own. Ideally, prevention is preferable.
