A $6,550 grant from the local Peavey Mart has made a new orchard in Moose Jaw possible. Sarah Regent is the co-chair of the South Central Food Security Network, and she described the presentation on Tuesday.

"So today Peavey Mart presented the South Central Food Security Network with a grant to develop an orchard which will be located at the 600 block of Hall Street East, which is currently pretty much vacant land."

The new orchard will have a variety of 102 plants, shrubs and trees and will include a good mixture of fruits according to Regent.

"We are having a good mixture of fruits; we will have some plums, apples, saskatoons, and sour cherries and will have a few different varieties of all of those [plants]."

There is currently one other orchard here in Moose Jaw, which can be found north of the train tracks that intersect Thatcher Dr. West in the VLA area, with the actual orchard being on the east side of the road.

"[May 31st] is our planting day, so we will have all of the plants, bushes and trees here in pots ready to plant, and we have partnered up with Prince Arthur School, so we will have some students out, but we can always use more volunteers to be getting those plants in the ground and spreading mulch to help get them started."

The South Central Food Security Network aims to try and make use of vacant land and improve access to healthy food in Moose Jaw and area.

The new community orchid will be planted on the south end of Happy Valley Park
