The leaves are starting to fall, and that means you might be out in your yard this weekend raking and tidying up this weekend.

If so, be sure to bag and hold onto your leaves, branches, and other organic yard waste material such as garden refuse as the City of Moose Jaw will be offering a free yard-waste weekend at the Sanitary Landfill Oct. 19 and 20.

For that weekend alone the City will waive the $10 fee at the landfill for organic waste only.

"We do the yard waste weekend twice a year, this year we're targetting for when most of the leaves have fallen off the tree," said Jesse Watamanuk, public works supervisor. "Give residents a chance to rake those up, bring them out to the landfill for free."

Residents will be able to dispose of organic yard waste such as leaves, grass clippings and pruned branches no larger than one inch in diameter. Residents may transport their organic yard waste in trailers behind their light vehicles; however, dual-axle and commercial trucks are not eligible for the fee waiver.

Those disposing of non-organic household waste, construction materials and other items such as furniture, mattresses and appliances, will be subject to regular landfill fees based on material and weight.

To increase efficiency, the City of Moose Jaw will create a designated yard waste zone, have staff inspect loads at the entrance and direct vehicles to the appropriate area.

The City reminds residents that according to city bylaw No. 5156, Section 23, tarpaulins are required to secure loads and violations will be issued for loads not secured by a tarp. This will keep roads and streets safe and free of debris.
