Valentine's Day isn't only an important day for couples, but also for flower shops.

One flower shop that is celebrating an extra special and exciting day is Evans Florist, as they are celebrating their 100th Valentine's here in Moose Jaw.

"It is very special," said Tina Couzens, Owner and Operator of Evans. "I was hoping to be busy enough to stay here for the hundred year anniversary, and we made it so that's all I was hoping for."

Back in 1918, the Evans family opened their store directly on Main Street and ran as a seed shop until the 1930s, when they moved to their location on the corner of Main and High.

"Rick [Evans] said since 1930, they've been in this location," Couzens explained. "When they started as a seed store, he said down where Joe's Place is, is where they had opened and they opened the seed store probably in 1919, 1920."

The Evans family has stepped back a little in recent years, but Rick and Ian Evans check in often as they still own the building. Their other brother, Keith, who passed away in 2017, worked in the shop up until his health declined.

Couzen has worked for the flower shop for 23 years now and is coming up on owning it for 10 years. She started at the flower shop when Valentine's Day started to really catch on and has experienced busy days along with that. This year is particularly busy, as she said Valentine's Day on a Wednesday is the busiest time because people are generally working during the week.

Along with that, Couzens has also seen changes over the years in the way flowers work and are treated. They now last longer and the popular flowers, like roses, are starting to be chosen a bit less than usual.

One thing Couzens hopes for is the continued success of the store, hoping it will stay open around until her retirement.
