One man was left in critical condition after an early morning fire.

Shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday, Moose Jaw Police, Fire and EMS were on the scene at a townhouse complex on the 300 block of Ross Street West.

Assistant Fire Chief Rod Stapleton says the call didn't initially come in as a fire call.

"First of all it came in as a gas leak, so we responded. On arrival, one crew went into the suite and noticed the unit next door had some smoke staining on the windows so we investigated and discovered it was on fire".

"Crews entered the rear to extinguish the fire, while the crew who was working on the gas leak entered the front and did a search of the upstairs. They found one occupant in one of the bedrooms. He was removed and handed off to EMS".

The one male inside the residence was rushed to the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Hospital in critical condition.

"I'd say approximately $75,000. The fire was put out in the cold temperatures. It was a little tough on our equipment but it all worked out well."

The fire was contained to one unit in the complex and all residents in the surrounding units were able to return home.

The Moose Jaw Police and Moose Jaw Fire Service continue to investigate.
