Having a winter survival kit for winter conditions can save your life

The frigid weather to start the week brings with it a reminder to have a winter survival kit in your vehicle in case of an accident or vehicle breakdown.

If your vehicle goes off the road, are you prepared? Experts say it is very important to have a winter survival kit in your vehicle just in case. "You want food that won't spoil, water in a plastic bottle, a blanket, and some good quality boots and gloves." says Greg Marcyniuk from Heritage Insurance.

Marcyniuk adds that a seatbelt cutter is also a good item to have in case you are stuck in a precarious position as a result of the accident.

CAA Saskatchewan has also issued a few tips for getting through cold weather safely:

- Testing your vehicle's battery, as colder temperatures can weaken the battery
- Slow down at intersections
- Carry a car phone charger
- Pack an emergency kit: non-perishable food, water, blankets, extra clothing, flashlight, first aid supplies, booster cables, shovel, etc.
- Plug in your vehicle during temperatures of -15 degrees celsius or less

In the case of being stranded or stuck, CAA recommends:

- Staying with your vehicle for temporary shelter
- Ensure the exhaust pipe is not clogged with snow or ice to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning
- Use any brightly coloured fabric to flag down help
