Preparing for the Future, the Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant presented their 2016 annual report to Moose Jaw City Council Monday night. One concern of council is the viability of the water supply as more and more families move to the area and more industry draws from the lake.

General Manager Ryan Johnson assured councillors that they take the supply of water very seriously.

"For the most part, over the last several years, the cities of Regina and Moose Jaw water usage is fairly flat, even with growth." explained Johnson. "As of right now, we don't see any indications that we need to see an expansion at the plant in the next five to ten years but based on long term plans, we could in the next 15 to 20 years where we may need some form of expansion."

A report on the future of the plant is expected this week by the board of directors that serves both Moose Jaw and Regina. Major upgrades to the plant have been expected for a number of years, even sparking a review of how each city pays for their share of the plant. The review is expected to spawn a recommendation for either upgrades or the construction of a new water treatment plant.

"The information will be there in a businesses case for the board to make a decision. Once the board makes a decision, we'll have to confer to the two cities... making sure that everyone is onside before any action is actually taken on this."

Johnson says there are benefits to both option that will secure enough water for the foreseeable future. While the report is due this week, it's not expected to be made public for another month or two.
