Peacock Collegiate High School was the stomping grounds for many local dancers over the weekend as they got prepped for a busy season ahead, but they also participated in an annual fundraiser.

Parents volunteered before and during Sunday nights show to help collect and gather donations for the food bank at the Dance For Hunger event on Sunday.

Each year Dance Images by B.J. hosts an event for the public on Sunday night following practices all weekend long for their students to raise money and food for a local agency in the city.

"Throughout the weekend we had all of our group dancers, that are getting ready for competition, have a stage practice," explained Shauna Bzdel, an instructor at the dance studio. "Every time they came they would bring food donations and then the wrap up for the weekend was our big Dance For Hunger show. The people who came, we didn't charge an admission; instead, they just needed donations to the Food Bank."

The dancers hit the stage in Peacock Collegiate's auditorium and made the donation on Monday morning.

Every spring when the fundraiser hits, dancers and their families make it their personal mission to have a bigger mountain of food to donate than the year before - an initiative that the Moose Jaw and District Food Bank is grateful for.

"This is something we look forward to every year. It fills our shelves, especially a few months after Christmas as our shelves start to go down again. It just makes you feel better about the year," said Terri Smith, Manager at the Food Bank.

"It means a lot, especially for hunger awareness; it lets everyone know that there are people out there that do need the food. Our numbers are going up, I've been at the food bank for the last 14 years, and I've noticed a big increase the last two years...the last year for sure, it's increasing daily."

The total hasn't been tallied just yet of exactly how many pounds of food were collected to go along with their silver plate donations, but Bzdel is sure that they beat last year's total.
