Local Peoples Party of Canada members have selected their candidate for the October federal election.

Chey Craik won a contested nomination for Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan and is looking forward to being on the ballot when the writ is dropped in the fall.

Craik has been following Maxime Bernier, through his career as a Conservative cabinet minister and that party's leadership race.

“When the Conservative Party no longer wanted him to be a part because of his tweets on immigration, I was disappointed,” Craik said. “And when he decided to start this new party, the People’s Party of Canada, I immediately knew I wanted to be part of it. He and I share values (and) the policies, I can get behind 100 per cent.”

Craik said it's time for real change in Canada with conservative values. He is looking forward to meeting people through town hall meetings and hitting the doorsteps throughout the riding.

“Part of the problem with a newer political party is getting the name out,” he said. “Not only my name but the name of the People’s Party of Canada. A lot of people haven’t heard of us. We do share values with the majority of people I talk to, so I think it’ll be easy to get the word out.”

Craik sees an appeal in doing politics differently, says he's looking forward to talking to people all over the riding and getting their viewpoints.

“A lot of people vote based on a colour and vote based on history and don’t actually know what the policies of the party are. When you present that to them, it really is an easy sell,” he said. “When they see where we are compared to where the other parties are, and when you have to vote morally and ethically anyway, that makes it an easy vote.”

The federal election is coming on October 21. Other nominated candidates thus far for the riding are incumbent Conservative Member of Parliament Tom Lukiwsky and New Democratic Party candidate Talon Regent.
