Construction season is a yearly challenge in Moose Jaw, and this year has been no different.

With water main replacements and road work, many detours have been set around town. As one project is completed another opens up, and it may seem like construction never ends - though work is on schedule.

Craig Hemingway, communications manager for the City, spoke on some of the work already completed.

"To date, the City has fixed 2700 potholes, resurfaced over 31 lane kilometres of road so far this year, rebuilt 2.8 kilometres of roads and preserved another 2.5. So a lot of work has already happened this year."

One of the biggest undertakings this year are the water main replacements, one of which is on Main Street.

"The Main Street portion of replacement will be completely done in about 3 weeks. The piece on Athabasca that's off of Main that's also closed, we're expecting that within the next week to be opened up by the library. It's an inconvenience, absolutely it is. But the plus side of course is new pipes underneath the ground that will last for decades and decades."

Manitoba Expressway has been a work in progress for most of the season, which was put on hold for sidewalk days and the airshow events, but has since resumed.

"Along with the repaving of the eastbound lanes, the entire intersection at 2nd Avenue and Manitoba Street is getting completely rebuilt. That's been a pretty difficult intersection for a number of years with rough road heading to South Hill or from South Hill. That will be all done by about mid September."

Right now to accommodate that work there's 2 way traffic in the west bound lanes on Manitoba Street to allow them to complete that section. Business access for the south side is from the end of Main Street, which allows access to every business along the south side of Manitoba Street.

The intersection of Lillooet and 9th SW.

Along with road work, the City has plans to add new traffic lights to busy intersections, one being Lillooet and 9th. Last summer, concerned citizens called for better traffic controls at that intersection.

"That work will be getting done by the end of this construction season. By the end of October, that work will be done, there will be new traffic lights up there and improvements to the intersection are going to greatly increase the efficiency at that intersection, and as well the safety for pedestrians at that intersection."

Traffic and intersection work is also planned to be done at 1st Avenue West and Caribou St. this year.

"We appreciate everybody's patience. It is a pain. We drive them, and detours are never fun. But the end result is new work, new pavement, and things that are fixed. Ideally for a long time. That's the trade off. We appreciate your safety around work zones. We ask people to respect all signage around work zones, and if the road is closed the road is closed."
