With the long weekend now upon us, you might be hoping to take the boat out for some fishing or even tubing. However, there are some precautions that need to be taken when on the water for the safety of everyone.

"Safe boating is really important, with the summer here we'll be seeing an increase in boat traffic," said local Weyburn Conservation Officer, Lindsey Leko. "We just want to ensure everyone is going to do it as safe as possible."

Leko reminds the public that both Conservation Officers and RCMP will be working together to ensure the safety of all those looking to enjoy the weather. He also reminds those who plan to go boating that consuming alcohol while operating a boat is against the law.

"Be sure you're leaving the liquor at home because we're really focusing on that this year," Leko added.

Personal Flotation Devices (PFD) are also required for any who are on a watercraft. However, not just any PFD works. Each member on the watercraft must have a PFD that fits them correctly. Leko uses the example that a child cannot use an adult's PFD as it will not work as intended should the child end up overboard.

Additionally, Leko reminds the public to ensure the boat plug is out when transporting the watercraft. This is due to an effort put in place to help prevent the spread of invasive species across the province. Failure to do so could result in a fine and inspection of the boat to ensure there are no invasive species aboard.
