The City of Moose Jaw is seeking the feedback of residents on two recommendations to rename two parks in Moose Jaw. One is the Wild Animal Park, and the other is Memorial Field.

It’s been suggested that Memorial Field is renamed Lyle Helland Field. Helland took over operations of Memorial Field in 1991 and committed 27 years of his life to take care of this stadium and making sure it was in excellent shape up until his passing in the fall.

It has also been recommended that the Wild Animal Park be renamed Tatawaw Park. Tatawaw is a Cree word meaning “there is room, you are welcome.” The park has many archaeological artifacts, resources, and First Nations burial sites.

“We do have a naming policy within the city, and they’re following the policy in terms of requests have been made to rename the respective parks,” said Craig Hemingway, Communications Manager for the City. “At this point, the committee is considering the requests and part of this is we want to hear from Moose Jaw residents and what they feel about the potential renaming.”

Before the recommendations are presented to City Council, the Naming Committee is requesting feedback from Moose Jaw residents to inform the discussion.

“What they want is citizen feedback on the potential renaming,” Hemingway said. “At that point, they’ll take that to City Council for deliberation.”
