Moose Jaw City Council has bumped up its regular meeting to Monday, Feb. 1 to avoid any conflicts with the Municipalities of Saskatchewan Convention.

The convention is slated to run virtually from Feb. 7 to 10.

On the agenda, council will discuss the landfill rates agreement with Potters Canada.

The city and Potters Canada have been in agreement for reduced glass disposal rates since 2009 and the latest agreement expired at the end of 2020. The agreement is for 50 per cent of the regular disposal rate.

At the time of the agreement, it was believed that the glass powder that was being disposed could be used by the city as a soil stabilizer. However, the city’s engineering department learned in 2018 that the glass powder was no longer needed.

The recommendation to council is to wind down the reduced rates in 2021 and full rates would be effective Jan. 1, 2022.

Council will also be discussing a couple of funding requests from the Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery and the Kinsmen Sportsplex.

The Moose Jaw Museum and Art Gallery is looking for $45,000 from the facilities building reserves to complete repairs to the building’s humidifiers.

The Kinsmen Sportsplex will need $56,525 to fund change orders for renovations to change rooms. The funds would come from transferring $30,000 from the $60,000 budgeted for the Moose Jaw Public Library for flooring repairs and $26,525 from savings from the demolition of the YMCA building.
