If you plan on going outside anytime between now and the new year, make sure to bundle up.

Temperatures will be staying in the -30°C range for the rest of the weekend.

According to Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist, John Paul Cragg, this cold snap is due to arctic air descending into the province.

"Thanks to this ridge in Alberta, cold arctic air is being pumped down into the prairie provinces. With it, we're seeing really cold temperatures with extreme wind chills."

Cragg said with these temperature extremes, it's important to be prepared.

"When you see extreme wind chill warnings out, it's important to know that hypothermia can set in a lot quicker than normal. Frost bite is also an issue, exposed skin can freeze between 5 and 10 minutes when you see a windchill between -40 and -45."

He recommends that everyone try and limit their time outside. If it's necessary to venture out into the cold, be sure to cover up any exposed skin and wear extra layers.

Cragg said the cold snap could last up until the start of next week, "We'll be seeing overnight lows in the -30 all the way till January 1st, with day time highs around -25. We're looking at cold, consistent temperatures up until the new year."

While flurries are popping in and out of the forecast, Cragg does not expect any significant snowfalls. "When you see these really cold arctic air masses descend into the province, most of the time they're quite dry."

Some may complain about the cold weather but Cragg has chosen to look on the bright side, "one of the benefits of this cold arctic air is that we'll be seeing a lot of sunny skies."
