While you may have a little more pull if elected for City Council this October by-election, residents have until Friday to hand in applications for one of the many City boards, commissions, and committees.

On advisory, planning or management positions, residents in Moose Jaw could be appointed to help shape the city.

"It's almost like council in training you know," Craig Hemingway, Communications Manager for the City explained. "These committees are the groups that will help form recommendations that at that point will then go to our City Council then at that point the council will weigh whether or not they'll go along and try and pass those recommendations but it really is, it's part of local government and part of people wanting to improve their community."

There are various types of appointments for people to apply for. Heritage, culture, the library, and housing to name a few, there are many different parts of the city you could help improve.

To name an example of how appointees have made differences, the Transportation Services Advisory Committee brought seven traffic bylaw suggestion to City Council, some of which came into effect earlier this year.

There are no specific criteria to apply, and while having a bit of expertise in the are wouldn't hurt, they are just looking for dedication and interest from those applying.

Past appointees can re-apply for positions, but the City does want more people to come out and fill the seats that are empty.

"Well we generally have a hard time filling all the spots so there's certainly a need to have more people who want to be involved," Hemingway added. "To step up and join one of the committees and you can select which committees you want to apply for and then the process will go from there."

Applications and more information on any boards, commissions, and committees can be found online or by contacting the City Clerk’s Office, 2nd Floor, City Hall, 228 Main Street N., Moose Jaw, SK, (306-694-4424).
