More changes are coming to garbage collection in Moose Jaw. Right now, there are around 700 properties that receive manual waste collection because the area they're in is too small for normal automated garbage trucks to manoeuvre.

Operations Manager Darrin Stephanson says the truck they used for manual collection failed this year and forced their hand.

"We needed to look at updating the service and now was the opportune time," said Stephanson. "Manual collection is very costly as well as the dangers that it presents to staff so it was a good opportunity to transition to automation."

Recycling bins are already in the back lanes and the contractor uses a smaller vehicle so this should be a smooth transition according to Stephanson.

There's no date for when the transition will start with Stephanson explaining that they have only received approval from council to start the process. They now need to put out tenders for the new truck and then wait for delivery. They're hoping to have it on the roads for early next year.

Another change to garbage collection will be the ability to request double service for either garbage or recycling. Until now, only a very few select homes were able to have two bins due to a large number of people living in the home or medical reasons. Now, anyone can request a second bin for either service at an increased cost.
