The City of Moose Jaw is transferring $300,000 from the Water Distribution System stream to the East Feeder Water Main Replacement stream to address a dead end water line on Oak Street.

About 150 metres of pipes will be needed to service the north side of the mall and a fire hydrant needs to be replaced in the same location. Construction crews will be adding 175 metres of water lines to loop in the dead end lines.

Fixing the dead end line is expected to resolve low-pressure and water quality issues on Oak Street and areas east of the mall.

There was some concerns because the work would affect the Lynbrook and Hillcrest golf courses.

Bevin Harlton, director of engineering, said they are doing everything possible to have as little impact on the golf courses as possible.

“We are limiting work until Oct. 15 so that means we can’t have contractors on site until Oct. 15,” Harlton said.

“The substantial completion is Dec. 31,which means everything has to be done, in the ground, and operational.”

He added that the engineering department looked at a few different plans before going with this one.

“When you look at the east side of Main Street, we are actually running the line to the north and that is connecting into an interconnector between the northeast reservoir and high service,” Harlton said.

“If we were running that further south alignment we would still have to cross Main Street and continue that distance north.”

The Water Distribution System funding stream is intended for upgrades to valves and hydrants with a capital budget of $400,000. Transferring the funds leaves $100,000 for valves and hydrants.

Moose Jaw City Council approved the fund transfer unanimously.
