While the temperature hasn't cooled off too much yet for winter, there are quite a few throughout the city waiting for the outdoor rinks to open.

Derek Blais, Director of Parks & Recreation, gave an update on Tuesday.

"The weather hasn't been overly favourable in creating our ice surfaces, so hopefully we can get that going in the next week or so, then it will be a two-to-three-week process to get the ice installed and ready for use. The key is the overnight temperature. If it stays well below zero overnight then it will allow us to make some progress on it."

And how will public health guidelines affect those looking to take advantage of the city's outdoor rinks? Blais says he wasn't quite sure yet.

"Our plan remains the same as in previous years, although we will have to adhere to whatever health measures are out there. We'll review the guidelines once we get closer to opening to see what the current measures are, knowing that the measures put in place at the moment will be reviewed on December 17. We'll review it at that time and make sure we have a proper notification out, proper signage, all that kind of stuff."

As of Wednesday, overnight lows this week are forecast to be floating around the minus 1 to minus 4 mark. The average low for this time of year is minus 14.
