Many residents have seen increases in various ways since the budget, however, city transit will not be one of those as it's actually going to see a decrease.

"One of the things that we have done and it's exciting news for our transit riders...we are reducing our transit fares, cash fares, to a $1.25 a ride," explained City Transit Manager Mark Sture.

Currently, the bus fare rate is set at $2.50, but once the change is made on July 1st, if you are a single person making one trip, it will soon cost you half the price to get to your destination.

Tough decisions were made in the budget process with numerous increases, but Sture said increasing the price for an item or service isn't always the answer.

"Typically, we increase the rates and hopefully we maintain the ridership, but there is a bit of an elasticity in the fare. Every time we increase the rates by 10% we can expect about 3% of our riders to drop off."

Sture noted that despite the price to ride the bus going down, there will be a few more changes that may impact residents who are taking multiple buses in one day.

"We will also be eliminating transfers, so every time you board a bus it will be a $1.25."

Moose Jaw will be following the lead of Brandon, Manitoba who also decreased their bus fare hoping to increase ridership and revenue.
