The Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Moose Jaw Downtown Association, is hoping to have a public parking pop-up patio downtown this summer.

The chamber is looking to set up a 13-foot parking stall patio that would be a space open to the public.

Heather Bergdahl addressed city council on Monday night on behalf of the chamber of commerce to outline their plan.

“The Chamber will create a lottery among businesses and have the pop-up patio designed and painted on location to create a community interest followed by a lottery of the restaurants for the 2021 summer resting spot,” Bergdahl said.

Bergdahl said the chamber would acquire permission from adjacent business owners and would acquire any insurance or engineering reports as needed. The chamber of commerce will bear all of the costs for the patio.

Since the city started allowing parking patios, the uptake for applications has been low.

“With limited pop-up patio applications being received to date, we are encouraged that others will want to participate after the installation of the chamber’s pop-up patio,” Bergdahl said.

City council passed unanimously to allow parking patios not directly associated with a business with approval from the adjacent property owners.

Coun. Crystal Froese put forward the motion, saying she was very excited about the project.
