It's a week of graduations and final grades, and when it comes to Central Collegiate they have not one, but two valedictorians to honor this year.

MacKenzie Verhelst and Emily Pinter are the co-valedictorians for the 2016 school year and have both worked for this honor since they came to the school in grade 9.

Verhelst talked about the open minded atmosphere she experienced at Central.

"Central's very multicultural. And it's really opened my eyes to different cultures, and being really open to just everything. It's being the opposite of narrow minded at Central (that) we're just accepting of everyone, and it really is just like a family at Central."

Both girls are headed off to university in the fall, Verhelst to McGill University in Montreal and Pinter to the University of Saskatchewan, and both say their choices in degrees comes from their favorite teachers.

Pinter said that while her favorite teacher, Ms. Connors, can come across as "scary at first", that she is actually "really kind", "helpful", and "hilarious". Connors' biology classes inspired Pinter to follow her dreams in studying the veterinarian sciences.

While he doesn't teach at Central anymore, Verhelst said it was her favorite grade 9 and 10 teacher, Mr. Mack, inspired her with his Psychology 20 class and made her want "to be someone people can talk to and confide in". Verhelst will be majoring in psychology at McGill University.

Right now though, the girls major focus is on writing the valedictorian speech they will need to present at their graduation ceremony on June 30th.
