We are now one step closer to having a referendum on the Local Improvement Plan funding model for Cast Iron work in Moose Jaw.

Citizens Advocating for Sensible Taxation exceeded the needed number of signatures for their petition, over seven thousand, and submitted their petition to City Hall on June 29th.

Two outcomes now remain. Either City Hall will "adopt the petition as a motion and then simply reverse the LIP" program, or the petition will become a city-wide referendum for the Fall elections this October.

While they hope for the former, Justin Hammer of CAST is confident the referendum will stop the LIP program if it comes to that.

"I would be very surprised, based on the feedback we received throughout this campaign, to see the city for the Local Improvement Program. It was the vast majority of people we knocked on doors, regardless of the area, were against it. So I expect a large majority of people will be voting against the Local Improvement Program in the Fall election."

It is now up to the City to verify the signatures on the petition before a decision is made.
