After three years of work, the Caronport lagoon expansion will be finished and fully operational by the end of August.

The current lagoon was developed in the early 60s and, the village was nearing capacity for the amount of wastewater it could hold with the new federal laws.

The 73,000 cubic-meter development will almost double the size of the lagoon and the Village of Caronport has employed KMS Construction for the expansion.

The New Building Canada Fund's Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component- Small Communities Fund Program is responsible for setting up the funding for the project. $656,666 will come from the Federal Government along with the Provincial Government contributing the same amount. The village of Caronport will fund the remainder of the project which totals out at nearly 2 million dollars.

The higher wastewater administration will allow the village to expand with more commercial and residential developments.

Mayor of Caronport, Daniel Buck, says this expansion will create a better environmental release into Thunder Creek.

"We were working with the Water Security Agency and watching our release qualities, and we were definitely nearing capacity," says Buck.

Briercrest College and Seminary will also be able to expand its student body with this new development.

Mayor Buck says although the project may not be the most glamourous, it will bring a lot of expansion opportunities to the village.

"We're looking towards the future for a couple of decades with a lot of possible growth within the community."
