The City of Moose Jaw will proceed in rezoning 319 Caribou St. W. to allow for a hair salon and massage therapy business.

The building has two floors that have apartment units on each floor. The rezoning would allow for a business on the first floor.

Journeyperson hairstylist Carime Molde and her sister Bree Campbell, a massage therapist, currently run home-based businesses and want to move into a commercial space.

“We don't work crazy hours. Most of our appointments are during school hours with the odd appointment in the evening or the weekend. There will be no large signage or advertisements since all of our services are booked by appointment only,” Molde told city council.

The building does have a history of having businesses run out of it.

Before 2014, a convenience store was run out of the first floor. The store was operating as a non-conforming use but was grandfathered from the previous zoning bylaw.

When the first floor was renovated into living quarters, it was bound by the residential bylaws.

Molde said the business would not have a big effect on the neighbourhood.

“Parking shouldn't be an issue with at most four vehicles outside at once. Our clients know since coming to our homes for appointments, how important parking is in a residential area.”

The motion to allow the process to rezone the building was passed unanimously by city council. Coun. Heather Eby recused herself as she is the co-owner of the building with her husband.
