The intersection of Caribou Street and Ninth Avenue Northwest reopened to traffic Tuesday morning with new lane configurations and traffic signals.

The new lanes include a left-turn only lane and a shared through/right turn lane in all four directions.

These new lane configurations will also allow buses to navigate right turns without straddling lanes.

The previous traffic lights were a "Split Phase Operation" that had green lights for one direction at a time to allow for left turns.

Now the lights will be a "Conventional Signal Phasing Operation" that will allow pedestrians and vehicle traffic to move concurrently. The left turn green arrow will only come up when there are vehicles in the left turn lanes. The green arrows will not be in use during off-peak hours such as evenings and overnight.

During evenings and overnight, the traffic signals will rest at green for north and south bound traffic on Ninth Avenue and a sensor detecting east and west bound traffic will switch the light.
