The City of Moose Jaw, Moose Jaw Co-op, and the East Side Community Association broke ground Wednesday morning for a brand new spray park on the East Side of the city.

Located at the park on the corner of 9th Avenue NE and Ominica, the new spray park will be wheelchair accessible and won't require constant supervision, allowing children to use it whenever.

Through a significant $120,000 grant from Co-op Community Spaces and another $165,000 from Moose Jaw City Council, the East Side Community Association was able to take the leap forward to replace the outdated, fenced in paddle pool with the spray park, at an already brand new playground at the park.

Mayor Fraser Tolmie, Councillor Crystal Froese, and Communications Manager Craig Hemingway were there representing the City, Mayor Tolmie said that community associations like the one on the East Side are Vital to our community.

"They live in their particular area right, and so they see some of the needs and opportunities that can present themselves and so when you've got drive and motivation like Jenny Gadd and her team has," he said. "They've done a great job so I'm really happy to see the fruits of their labour."

Gadd is the Chairperson of the East Side Community Association. They've sponsored and built a couple projects on their side of town to improve the area, and they're happy to see the fruits of their labour.

"It's really exciting, it's very satisfying to see this project start and to know that our community association, the group that's currently a part of it, is leaving a really long lasting mark on the East Side," Gadd said. After this project, Gadd said they also hope to have a stronger community presence. Begin at events rather than just sponsoring them.

Immediately after the groundbreaking ceremony, the construction crew moved in to begin building the new spray park.

They expect the work to be completed by Halloween, and the spray park will be ready to go next summer.
