With the long weekend fast approaching, some families will be taking to the road for a holiday. There are a few ways to keep yourself and your loved ones safe while driving.

"For drivers," shared Christine Niemczyk, director of communications with CAA, "we know there's going to be a lot of road trips planned this summer so allow plenty of time to travel. Do your GPS navigating, map directing, all of that before you get behind the wheel. Plan your route in advance and let others know what your route is going to be."

"Drive according to the weather and road conditions. Please remember to slow to 60 km on Saskatchewan highways when passing a working tow truck operators, emergency personnel, and construction crews."

This is extra important to be mindful of, as dozens of roadside highway projects are taking place all over provincial highways.

"Please don't drive impaired, always have a backup plan."

She added that having an emergency kit in the car is a good idea in any weather.

"If you want to put one together, please include a flashlight, extra batteries, pressure gauge pliers, wrench, blanket, anything you might need to help you should you find yourself stranded."

Also having extra food and water as well as a phone charger in the car is a good idea as well.

She also advised being on the lookout for bigger vehicles such as farm equipment and RVs and keep an extra eye out during dawn and dusk for wildlife.
