Each year a group of sponsors teams up with educators and administrative partners in the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division to host an annual event geared towards reading.

Battle of the Books is a lengthy process, as teachers and students are supplied with various books that they have to read and study, as they will be quizzed on their knowledge in a competition against other schools.

That quiz took place on Tuesday where students from across the division put their skills to the test.

"They give us a set of books that they want us to read, and we do a Kahoot at the end," explained Grade Six student at Sacred Heart Elementary School, Joaquin Tyria. "For this year it was Refugee, Terror at Turtle Mountain, the Haddix Found, Restart, Who's Jesus (and) Blackbird Fly."

Students look forward to the main event each year, as it sees a large group of students cheering each other on and hoping to bring the trophy home to their school.

"It was loud that's for sure. It was a lot of fun. There were two rounds, one round where it was just the first teams, then the second teams. Then there was another round where whoever wins gets the trophy."

He noted that to make the competition fair they split the Battle of the Books into two separate categories that each have their own books and games to play.

"The Battle of the Books, it has 3-5 and 6-8, with 3-5 St.Agnes won and 6-8 it was St. Michael's."

Tyria noted that he enjoys reading, so an event like this doesn't feel like work and shows students how fun reading can be. "My friends say I have a reading addiction."

He also encourages all elementary students in the Holy Trinity School Division to take part if they have the chance and said his school will be receiving new books for participating.
