You'll continue to see Coop employees walking around local establishments for the next little while.

The two sides met this past Friday, but according to the union that represents Coop employees UFCW Local 1400 no negotiating was taking place so they left the table.

Both sides released statements this week noting the rejection of the offer from Coop management. In the release put out by Coop, Manager Gerry Onyskevitch expressed his concern with employees supporting competitors who have second and third tiers during the strike, which is something the union wanted to be abolished when the bargaining talks commenced.

Director of Negotiations for the union, Rod Gillies, argued back saying the Coop isn't the only business going through this process right now.

"What the General Manager neglected to say was that we are presently in negotiations with those competitors, negotiations with respect to wages is ongoing with all the competitors."

Onyskevitch also added that the second tier was something the union pushed for and voted in back in 2014. Gillies argued back saying that was a lifespan on that documentation, just like anything that can be changed or upgraded every few years.

"I just wanted to make it clear that when a contract expires, all provisions in the contract are up for renewal. When we commenced bargaining the employer put forward many, many concessions and the union had put forward a list of improvement and all of those provisions within the contract were up for renegotiation."

Gillies also said that since the two sides haven't found common ground yet, the union has pulled back with some of their recommendations and attempted to meet management halfway.

"Our proposal consists of a mechanism in which a very small percentage of second-tier employees would have an opportunity to transfer to the primary grid after four years of working at the Coop, that's four years worth of hours."

With no resolution decided yet the two sides are set to meet again, Gillies said he'll be reaching out to Coop management this week to decide on a day for their next meeting.
