For some kids, this time of year can be exciting as they prepare to go back to school after a summer off. But not everyone feels that way.  Many students are feeling anxious, especially if they are going into a new school.

"It's not a bad thing and that avoidance (of stress) does make the problem worse." said Holy Trinity School Psychologist Debbie MacDonald. "if someone is stressed out about going to school, avoiding school is the worst possible thing that they could do.

MacDonald said parents can help by talking to their kids, listening to their concerns, and avoid minimize their anxiety or problems.

"Have open conversations with your kids about these things. Yes, we've all had to go through the anxiety of going to a new school or changing to a new school but don't minimize their fears."

Some school offer new students a chance to check out the school before the year starts and even offer dry runs to get used to the lay of the land. Sometimes that familiarity can ease the transition.
