We're down to the final few weeks of construction season.

One community that's pushing things into high gear and taking advantage of the recent sunshine is the town of Assiniboia.

Mayor Bob Himbeault said they've gotten a lot done this year despite some wet periods throughout the summer and fall.

"We were delayed because of weather; the weather's looking good now so we're hoping to get that started this week and wind up before the end of the month. Also, another project that we just started was some drainage improvements and that's worth about a little over $400,000," explained Mayor Himbeault. "Our roadwork project, that was about a $480,000 dollar project, we were doing trench fill and a lot of deep patches and we're down to about the last deep patch. We're hoping by this week that we'll have all the paving work done. Our sidewalk repair work has about $55,000 worth there."

Ongoing, they have 2 million dollars worth of upgrades to their water treatment plant that they hope will be completed in 2019.

But current construction isn't the only thing on the brain for workers and officials in Assiniboia. They're also optimistic about a recent program announced by the province, and what that could mean for funding opportunities.

"I think the news of the province signing on to the Next Infrastructure Grant Program and the fact that they're including recreational facilities in that. We're looking forward to the applications dates so we can apply for that grant for our new arena... we're excited about that, waiting to see the applications and then find out if we're successful in that one."

The Assiniboia Cive Center is over 60 years old and doesn't have seating at their rink.
