Last Friday, SaskPower announced they had signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Potentia Renewables Inc., who will build a 200 megawatt wind power facility near Assiniboia.

Potentia’s Golden South Wind Energy facility and the project are expected to produce up to 60 wind turbines, and bring SaskPower’s total wind power capacity to more than 600 megawatts.

Bob Himbeault, the mayor of Assiniboia, said the town was excited to learn about the project.

“We heard there was something going to happen. When it was announced, it was great news. Potentia has worked hard. We’re very excited about it.”

According to Himbeault, the location of the project will be “in a corridor east of town” that goes south, “just outside of town” and that it will “skirt past the huge sub station.”

The Mayor also noted that the project will bring about “300 construction jobs while it’s going on, until 2021. We’ll have a couple of good years of construction activity. Activity is great for the community. And then there are some maintenance jobs after that.”

Potentia’s Golden South Wind Energy facility will produce enough renewable electricity to power approximate 90,000 homes.

SaskPower Minister Dustin Duncan said, “This new wind energy project further demonstrates our commitment to renewable energy as part of our comprehensive provincial climate change strategy.”
