The steps of the Legislature Building in Regina were the scene of a protest Saturday afternoon, as people came out against the public health measures put in place in Saskatchewan that are aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19. Those in attendance were from across the province, with convoys of vehicles heading to the provincial capital from communities like Saskatoon, Weyburn, Yorkton and Swift Current.

The Regina Police Service did issue two tickets to those they identified as the organizers of the protest for violating public health orders that are in place. The tickets were for $2,800.

Those attending the protest carried signs that called the pandemic a scam and called for the end of the public health measures. The speakers also called on Premier Scott Moe to end the public health measures that are in place, and also stated the media was complicit in spreading what they deemed were lies and misinformation about the pandemic.

Moe commented about the rally on social media. “I understand a large anti-mask rally is being planned today in Regina,” he said on Twitter. “I hope those attending would consider how insignificant the inconveniences they are being asked to follow really are compared to the pain of losing a loved one.

NDP leader Ryan Meili also commented via social media. He retweeted a profanity-laced video of one of the speakers at the protest, saying “This is disgusting, idiotic and dangerous. It's blatantly racist, which is always wrong, always unacceptable. It's even more infuriating to hear directed against Dr. Shahab, who's working so hard to keep all Sask people safe.”
