It's a message we often hear, but not everyone is heeding the warning. Lock your vehicle.

Thursday's Police Report from the Moose Jaw Police Service showed that several vehicles had been left unlocked, entered, and had property stolen. Now, the police service is reminding residents to take the time to lock their vehicle, especially during this holiday season.

"It something that seems to [happen more] at different times of the year and this is certainly one of them," Sgt. Kevin Pilsworth with the MJPS said. "Around the holiday season where people are busy and it's a bustling time and sometimes people just don't take the time to lock their vehicle."

With more people heading location to location with extra items in their vehicle, some of which are valuable, car thieves may be more intrigued by easy targets.

"Car shopper that are out there, this is certainly a big time of the year for them and they're looking for easy, attractive targets so you want to take the necessary steps you can to make your vehicle less attractive for them," Sgt. Pilsworth explained.

Obviously, the MJPS want you to lock your vehicles. While they do deal with forced break-ins with vehicles, they are fewer and farther in between than open vehicles being entered.

If you have any valuable items in your car, take them out if they are necessarily supposed to be in there. If they are, then hide them the best you can.

Hiding items also apply to anything that may entice a thief, such as a backpack.

Also, even if you are leaving your car on to keep it warm and will only be away for a second, don't risk it. It only takes that much time for a thief to enter your car and grab your cards. Thursday's Police Report also shows that stolen credit cards and bank cards were used at multiple locations.

So either have a spare key to lock your vehicle while it is warming up or turn it off altogether and take your keys with you.

Be proactive, and do your best to keep your unlocked vehicle out of the police report.
