15 Wing commemorated the 79th anniversary of the Battle of Britain over the weekend.

The Battle of Britain raged over London and the English countryside, and lasted 114 days. It was also pivotal in stopping Nazi Germany from invading Britain.

Jesse Olsen, Harvard Flight Commander at 15 Wing, described why the battle was important for Canada.

"This battle specifically was the right of passage for the Royal Canadian Air Force to fight as its own unit. It was the first big battle that the RCAF was involved in."

Olsen also went into detail about why it's important to commemorate the battle.

"So we're here remembering the sacrifice that a relative few number of aviators made which saved Britain from invasion."

Over 100 Canadians served in the battle with 23 giving the ultimate sacrifice.
