Moose Jaw's Marie Wright, Moose Gibson and Saskatchewan 1 weren't able to repeat as champions at the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship.

Saskatchewan 1's run ended with a 4-3 loss to Manitoba in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at the 2019 edition of the national championship.

The local team was able to finish on a high note, however, as they bounced back to beat Ontario 2, 4-1, in the fifth place game on Tuesday evening.

In the playoff game, Manitoba chipped away at Saskatchewan 1 to take the narrow win. The two sides blanked the first end and then proceeded to trade singles over the next three ends with Manitoba leading 2-1.

After a blank in the fifth, Saskatchewan took the lead with a deuce in the sixth, but Manitoba answered with a single in the seventh and a steal of one in the eighth for the win.

In the fifth place game, Saskatchewan 1 did all of its scoring without the hammer in the win.

After blanking the first three ends, Saskatchewan 1 stole one in the fourth and then stole one again in the fifth. They took a 4-0 lead with a deuce in the sixth and Ontario 2 couldn’t mount a comeback over the final two ends.

Moose Jaw's Donna Ackerman skipped Saskatchewan 2 to an eighth place finish after they lost 7-5 to British Columbia 2 in the seventh place game on Tuesday afternoon.

Saskatchewan 2 opened with a single in the first and a steal of one in the second for an early 2-0 lead, but B.C. struck back with one in the third and then a steal of three in the fourth.

Ackerman and her team regrouped for a deuce in the fifth and a steal of one in the sixth to reclaim the lead at 5-4, but B.C. responded with a deuce in the seventh and one in the eighth for the win.

The championship games go on Wednesday morning with Manitoba squaring off with Alberta for gold. Northern Ontario faces Ontario 1 in the bronze medal game.
