Brody Willms made 21 saves for his second career WHL shutout as the Moose Jaw Warriors opened the 2017-18 regular season with a 3-0 win over the Prince Albert Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre on Friday night.

Brayden Burke, Justin Almeida and Jett Woo all scored in the win for the Warriors, who will now host Prince Albert for their home opener at Mosaic Place on Saturday night.

Throughout the first period on Friday, both teams showed the excitement and energy of the start of a new season. At times, both teams played to their strengths, the Warriors used their speed to attack the Raiders’ net, while Prince Albert used their fore-check to sustain attack time and feed their defenceman for shots.

Willms and Raiders goalie Ian Scott were sharp in the first period, they combined for 21 saves to keep the game scoreless after the opening twenty minutes.

The second period was tight to start as the teams fought to create offensive opportunities, but as the period went on the game started to open up and the chances started to come.

Moose Jaw found their way on to the scoreboard at 6:36 when Tanner Jeannot fought through a back-check and came across the Raiders line, he slid the puck ahead to Noah Gregor, who charged in on the left wing and then set up Burke on the right side where he hammered in his first of the season.

Just 56 seconds into the third period, the Warriors went up by two when Almeida put a shot off of a Raider skate and directed it over the goal line.

The Warriors found more breathing room just three minutes later, when Jett Woo rifled a shot from the point past the Raiders goalie.

Prince Albert tried desperately to battle back in to the game, but were turned away by Willms who stopped all 21 shots that he faced in the win.

Moose Jaw outshot the Raiders 40-21 and were 0-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

These two teams collide Saturday in a rematch at Mosaic Place, catch all the action on Country 100 starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:40 p.m.
