A four-game in five-day schedule for the Moose Jaw Warriors opened on Wednesday with a 3-1 win over the Kootenay Ice at Western Financial Place in Cranbrook, B.C.

The win extends the Warriors winning streak to a season-high six games, they have points in eight straight games and 10 out of their last 11.

"The team is hot right now, we have a groove going, so it's good to get the first one out of the way and just look to build during the three-in-three that we have [coming up]," said Warriors forward Keenan Taphorn.

Taphorn, who was acquired from Kootenay earlier this season, opened the scoring for Moose Jaw in the first period. He now has three goals in three games against his former club.

"Coming back to Cranbrook, it felt great to get that one and it felt even better to help [the Warriors] get the victory against my old team," said Taphorn.

Captain Josh Brook led the Warriors with a goal and two points, as the Warriors scored once each period on their way to the victory.

It wasn't a pretty win for the Warriors, but they got the job done.

"There wasn't a lot going on out there, there was a lot of clutter and pucks just being bashed around, but we got the two points at the end of the day and that's what you're looking for. We're going to need to improve our game and be better for the next three coming up," said Warriors assistant coach Scott King on the Country 100 Post-Game Show.

The Warriors and Ice battled back and forth throughout the first period, both teams had moments of pressure, but both teams were denied lanes to the net due to strong defensive play.

Moose Jaw was first on the scoreboard at 7:46 when Brook tossed the puck up the ice to Taphorn, who fought his way across the Kootenay line for a shot that beat Ice goalie Duncan McGovern. It was Taphorn’s sixth goal of the season.

The second period was similar to the first, as both teams had to fight for their chances due to the stingy defensive play.

At 3:34, rookie Cameron Sterling fought the puck away from the Ice along the Kootenay right boards, he moved the puck to the point for Brook, after dishing back-and-forth with Daemon Hunt and with plenty of traffic in front of the Kootenay net, Brook tossed a shot that went off of the goalie and over line to make it 2-0.

Moose Jaw started the third period on the power play and were able to get pressure, but couldn't push the puck in, however, just as Kootenay got back to even strength, at 1:55, Tristin Langan controlled the puck in the right corner and made a cross-ice pass to Jett Woo on top of the left circle, Woo skated inside the circle and then put a shot top shelf over the Kootenay goalie for his third of the season.

Kootenay got a goal back at the midway point of the period when Peyton Krebs scored his seventh, but that's all they could muster.

Warriors goalie Adam Evanoff made 26 saves to preserve the victory.

Moose Jaw finished 0-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
