A record-setting regular season went into the books with a pair of losses for the Moose Jaw Warriors this past weekend.

Moose Jaw fell 6-5 in overtime to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night at Mosaic Place and then the Warriors lost 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday in Brandon.

Saturday’s game saw the Warriors blow a 4-0 lead, which Assistant Coach Scott King said is something that they need to learn from going into the playoffs.

“That third period is a lesson for us, we need to be ready to go and if you’re not ready to go, it’s going to be difficult,” said King.

Heading into the playoffs, the Warriors will need to have everyone pulling in the same direction to have success.

“Everybody has to do their job, it’s real simple,” said King. “We have a good team with tons of skill, so we need our top-six guys to play like top-six guys and we need our third and fourth line guys to play hard and take minutes away too. It’s a team effort.”

The Warriors set the franchise record for wins and points while winning their first Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy. While everyone goes back to zero to start the playoffs, King added that there’s plenty of the Warriors to build off going into the playoffs.

“It was a pretty fantastic year for the team, lots of guys reached lots of amazing numbers, so lots of positive stuff and we’ll take that, move into playoffs and be ready to go for Game 1,” said King.

The Warriors will open the 2018 WHL Playoffs on Friday night when they host the Prince Albert Raiders at Mosaic Place. Game 2 goes on Saturday here in Moose Jaw before the series shifts to Prince Albert next week.

Warriors forward Jayden Halbgewachs finished the regular season tied for the franchise record in goals with 70.

While he fell short of breaking the record, Halbgewachs said he’s pretty proud to have even tied the mark, which was set by Blair Atcheynum in 1988-89.

“70 goals in a season is pretty unreal and to tie that record is surreal and it’s obviously a pretty proud moment,” said Halbgewachs after scoring twice on Friday to hit the 70-goal mark.

“I share that moment with all my teammates, especially my linemates, it just shows what kind of team we have, we’re all proud of each other and we all want to break records.”

Halbgewachs ended up winning the scoring title for not only the Western Hockey League, but his 129 points led the entire Canadian Hockey League this season.
