A six-game point streak ended on Friday for the Moose Jaw Warriors, as the Calgary Hitmen played a hard game and picked up a 5-1 win at Mosaic Place.

Calgary goalie Carl Stankowski made 30 saves for the Hitmen in the win, while Warriors 17-year-old Alek Sukunda scored his first WHL goal in the loss for Moose Jaw.

The first period was fast, as both teams raced up the ice and tried to attack the oppositions net. Moose Jaw outshot Calgary, 15-10, in the opening period but wasn’t able to get on the scoreboard. Instead, the Hitmen forced a turnover at their blue-line and chipped the puck around the Warriors defenceman, which resulted in a breakaway for Jake Kryski, who converted on his opportunity to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The teams continued to battle in the second period, defensively they both made good plays to take away offensive opportunities.

At 14:24, the Hitmen increased their lead to 2-0 when Cael Zimmerman put the puck in at a sharp angle along the right goal line.

Penalties hurt the Warriors in the third period, as they took back-to-back minors to give Calgary a lengthy two-man advantage. They took full advantage of the opportunity, as Mark Kastelic scored back-to-back goals on the power play to make it a 4-0 game.

Moose Jaw broke up the shutout at 11:31 when Sukunda created a turnover inside the Calgary zone and ripped a quick shot to the back of the net for his first WHL goal.

The Warriors tried to claw their way back in the game late but the Hitmen added an empty-net goal from Josh Prokop to finish off Moose Jaw.

Warriors goalie Brodan Salmond finished with 31 saves while Moose Jaw went 0-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-3 on the penalty kill.

Moose Jaw’s weekend continues on Saturday with a trip into Regina for their second meeting of the season against the Pats. On Sept 30, the Warriors picked up a 2-1 win in the Queen City.
