The preseason is in the books and the Moose Jaw Warriors have turned their attention to the 68-game regular season schedule in front of them.

The Warriors posted a 2-3-0-1 record during the exhibition schedule as they worked to identify the team's strengths and weaknesses heading into the regular season.

"There's a lot of teaching, a lot of developing going on," said Head Coach Tim Hunter after Sunday's 3-2 shootout loss to Brandon in the preseason finale.

"There's a lot of new faces, 36 guys in camp played games for us, we know what our 13-14 forwards are going to look like, our eight defencemen are going to look like and that came out of all that, so it was a good process."

Coming out of the preseason, it's evident that the Warriors will play a different style than they did in 2017-18 after a lot of firepower departed the team in the offseason.

Hunter said the team is confident that they will grow as the season goes.

"We're losing a lot of offence and that will be a big area to work on is offence by committee, offence by five guys, not Jayden Halbgewachs taking the puck to the net and scoring, so we've got those areas to work on," he said.

"We've got a good depth of players, so we're going to be a four-line team, six defence because guys are going to have to play and develop."

Role players from last year's squad will be expected to step up this season for the Warriors and they already started to do that in the preseason.

18-year-old forward Tyler Smithies finished the preseason on a high note as he scored the game-tying goal in the third period against Brandon on Sunday. Smithies ended up leading the Warriors in preseason scoring with a goal and four points in five games.

"I was able to contribute up front, which is something that I wasn't really able to do last year, but now that I'm getting some more ice, I'm able to contribute offensively," said Smithies.

"The more ice you get out there, the better you feel, your legs don't tire out, you have that adrenaline going the whole game."

Smithies had a goal and five points in limited playing time during 36 games as a rookie last season.

20-year-old forward Tristin Langan is another player that the Warriors will be looking to for offence this season. He also scored in the preseason finale, giving him a goal and three points in three preseason games.

"I'm excited for a bigger role here, I'm really excited to get the season going, we've got a strong group here," said Langan.

The Warriors will open the regular season coming up on Friday night at Westoba Place in Brandon. They will host the Wheat Kings the next night at Mosaic Place.

Hunter said the team is in a good position heading into those two games.

"It's a good thing playing Brandon two games in a row (to end the preseason)," he said. "We've got a whole week to prepare, our guys have worked hard and they came to camp in great physical condition."
