With their sixth overall selection Tuesday, the Moose Jaw Warriors picked Martin Rysavy from Vitkovice in the Czech Republic in the 2020 CHL import draft.

The forward scored 12 goals and 13 assists last season in 36 games with Prerov of the Czech Republic, and He stands 6-foot-2-inches and weighs 202 pounds. Warriors general manager Alan Millar said it isn't just a swing for the fences kind of draft pick.

"The fact is that, like a lot of things right now ...  this Import Draft was unique, in terms of getting commitments from players without the understanding of when we're going to start regular season play, " Millar said. "So a lot of these European players may have a lot of options in their home countries that may be starting before the CHL starts. There are certainly lots of things to play out. I don't think there's anything in the CHL draft that happened today that's 100 percent guarantee."

Millar said the Warriors scouted him at the U17 Challenge tournament in Medicine Hat this winter and he and head coach Mark O'Leary spoke to Rysavy in a zoom conference last week and had a good conversation about Moose Jaw. Millar said Rysavy is interested in playing in the CHL.

"Martin's a player that we really like and hopefully our season starts in a timely fashion and we're able to get Martin over here," Millar said.

He scored the overtime winner for the Czechs in the bronze medal game last November. Rysavy was the captain of that team, scoring three goals and two assists in the tournament.

Millar said Rysavy is a left-shooting forward who can play wither wing, and that he fits in with what they're trying to build in the next couple of years.

"I think he's a guy that projects well in terms of his potential," Millar said. "Obviously he brings some character and some leadership, and we really like the potential in his game."

With 2001-born forward Martin Lang of the Czech Republic set to return next season, the Warriors passed on their second-round pick 66th overall this year.
