A day that started with the Moose Jaw Warriors dealing Jett Woo to the Calgary Hitmen ended with Moose Jaw adding 10 prospects to the organization in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.

The Woo trade gave Moose Jaw the 11th overall selection in the first round which they used to draft Dominion City, MB product Denton Mateychuk.

"We're getting an offensive defenceman who can play defence but he's a player that run your power play, makes a great first pass and joins the rush. He's going to add a lot of dynamic to the organization," said Warriors assistant GM Jason Ripplinger.

Mateychuk posted 23 goals and 61 points in just 36 games playing for the Eastman Selects Bantam AAA team.

The skilled defenceman was the third-ranked prospect in the draft, according to Western Elite Hockey Prospects, just behind Matthew Savoie and Conor Geekie, who went to the Winnipeg Ice, first and second overall respectively.

Ripplinger said that there was a lot about Mateychuk that stood out throughout the season."Just the way that he controls the play, never panics under pressure and his first pass," he said.

Mateychuk joins a long and successful list of defencemen that the Warriors have selected in the first round recently, including Woo, Josh Brook and Daemon Hunt.

"For whatever reason, Manitoba is developing a lot of defencemen and we just thought he was the best player at that time," said Ripplinger.

After taking Mateychuk, the Warriors didn't select again until the fourth round when they took Irma, AB forward Jagger Firkus with the 82nd pick.

Firkus (5-foot-5, 125 lbs) had 33 goals and 65 points in 30 games with the Lloydminster Bobcats Bantam AAA team last season. He also posted a goal and three points in five games at the Alberta Cup recently.

Moose Jaw had two selections in the fifth round, going with defenceman Carson Brisson with the 104th pick and goalie Kyle Kelsey at 107th.

Brisson is committed to the University of Denver in the NCAA. The 5-foot-10, 130-pound defenceman had 18 goals and 37 points in 32 games with the Leduc Oil Kings last season.

Kelsey comes from the Burnaby Winter Club Bantam Prep team where he went 12-3 with a 2.67 goals against average and 0.918 save percentage in 16 games.

In the sixth round, the Warriors used the 117th pick to take defenceman Jaden Waddell from Winnipeg. The 6-foot, 185-pounder had three goals and 12 points in 29 games for the Rink Academy Bantam Prep team in 2018-19.

The Warriors looked to the Northwest Territories for the first time in franchise history for their eighth round pick, selecting right-winger Carter McLeod (5-foot-11, 165 lbs) with the 170th pick. The Yellowknife product had 12 goals and 18 points in 30 games with the Edge Academy Bantam Prep team.

Moose Jaw selected Carberry, MB forward Luke Robson in the ninth round, 178th overall. Robson played for the Southwest Cougars in 2018-19 and had 17 goals and 17 assists in 32 games.

For their second pick in the ninth round, the Warriors stayed in Manitoba and selected Dakota MacIntosh from Winnipeg. The 5-foot-9, 162-pound centre finished with 32 goals and 62 points in 34 games for the Winnipeg Warriors Bantam AAA team.

In the tenth round, the Warriors used the 214th pick on right-defenceman Darien Schaan, who picked up two goals and 12 points with the Rink Academy this season. The Portage La Prairie, MB product stands in at 5-foot-9, 169 lbs.

With their last pick in the 11th round, the Warriors took 5-foot-6, 160-pound centre Thomas Tien from Richmond, B.C. He had a big year with 24 goals and 60 points in 30 games for the St. George's School Bantam Prep team.

No Moose Jaw-born players were selected in this year's draft, while Saskatoon's Kevin Korchinski was the lone Saskatchewan player taken in the first round. Click here for the full list of draft picks.
