A sold-out crowd was on the edge of their seats on Saturday as the Moose Jaw Warriors charged late in the third period but just came up short, falling 4-2 to the Brandon Wheat Kings at Mosaic Place.

Newly named captain, Josh Brook scored twice for the Warriors in the third period in his first game back from Montreal Canadiens camp, while Adam Evanoff turned away 24 shots in the loss.

The first period didn't start exactly how the Warriors were hoping, as the Wheat Kings scored on the second shift of the game. 20-year-old forward Linden McCorrister tipped a shot past goalie Adam Evanoff to open the scoring just 1:07 into the game.

Brandon added to their lead less than six minutes later, when their captain, Stelio Mattheos, forced a turnover at the Warriors' blue-line and then finished off a pass from Luka Burzan to make it 2-0.

The Warriors were good in the offensive end throughout the period, outshooting the Wheat Kings, 10-9, but they couldn't beat import goalie Jiri Patera.

Moose Jaw tried to press early in the second period, but unfortunately, the Wheat Kings had other ideas.

Just 1:52 into the middle frame, Brandon moved up the ice quickly and was able to spot 16-year-old rookie Ridly Greig on top of the Warriors crease, where he scored his first WHL goal to make it 3-0.

Similar to Friday’s game in Brandon, the Warriors came out hard in the third period and started to attack the Wheat King net.

After killing off a penalty to start the third period, the Warriors landed on the power play. Brook came down the right boards and put a hard shot towards the net that beat Jiri Petra to get the Warriors on the board.

At 10:57, the Warriors battled hard below the Brandon goal line and were eventually able to force the puck to Brook, who put another shot past Patera to pull Moose Jaw to within one.

For the rest of regulation, the Warriors had their chances to tie the game, but just came up short and ended up falling 4-2 after the Wheat Kings added a late empty net goal.

Justin Almeida picked up two assists for the Warriors, while Moose Jaw outshot the Wheat Kings 14-6 in the third and 30-28 overall. The Warriors were also 1-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

The Warriors are now off until next weekend when they’ll take on a pair of division rivals. On Saturday, the Prince Albert Raiders come to Moose Jaw for a rematch of their 2018 first round playoff series and then next Sunday, the guys will make the short trip to Regina for their first meeting of the season against the Pats.
