The Moose Jaw Warriors finished their weekend schedule with a hard fought 4-1 win over the Prince George Cougars at Mosaic Place on Saturday night.

Justin Almeida led the Warriors past his former team, scoring his 30th goal of the season and finishing with three points.

In the first period, the Warriors showed good fight, as they kept the Cougars pinned inside their zone. Their fore-check attacked well and created turnovers, which allowed for extra attack time.

Inside the final three minutes of the first, Almeida created a turnover inside the Cougar circle, he swung the puck between the circles for Ryan Peckford, who then dished it to the right goal line for Brayden Burke, who blasted a one-timer in for his 25th goal of the season.

The Warriors attack continued in the second period, as they pumped 16 shots on net in the frame and had 29 through two periods.

On the power play with just over five minutes remaining in the period, defenceman Josh Brook was able to feed Almeida in the low slot where he snapped in his 30th goal to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

Moose Jaw kept coming in the third period as they tossed another 19 shots on net.

At 10:43, Vince Loschiavo went crashing into the Prince George end boards on the fore-check and was able to move the puck inside the right circle for Tristin Langan, who quickly fed Tate Popple on the side of the left crease, where he lifted in his sixth goal of the year.

They added to their lead just under two minutes later when Almeida dropped the puck to the left Cougars point where Brandon Schuldhaus stepped in to a slap-shot for his third of the year.

There was plenty of penalties late in the game and Prince George scored a 5-on-3 power play goal to get on the scoreboard.

Warriors goalie Adam Evanoff made 23 saves in the win, while Moose Jaw outshot Prince George 48-24. The Warriors were 1-for-7 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.

The win moves their record to 40-9-1-2 on the season and marks the sixth time in franchise history that they’ve hit the 40-win milestone.

The Warriors have another long break in-between games as they won’t be back in action until next weekend when they host a pair of Central Division teams.  Next Friday, the Lethbridge Hurricanes make their first stop of the season in Moose Jaw and then next Saturday, the Kootenay Ice are in town.
